Kuala Lumpur (9 March 2021): Universiti Kuala Lumpur’s (UniKL) drive towards offering an enriching university experience and academic excellence marked a new chapter when it was enlisted for the first time in the Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Ranking 2021.

Malaysia’s largest private technical entrepreneurial university with an enrolment of 22,000 students and under the aegis of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), UniKL is ranked 400-500 position, a remarkable achievement since its evolution in 2002.

It is also amongst 15 Malaysian universities out of 606 tertiary institutions from 48 countries and regions worldwide or 14 percent more than in 2020 (533), as 86 universities make their debut. The results were announced by Times Higher Education today.

The rankings use the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings to judge institutions on their teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. For THE Emerging Economies University Rankings, they are recalibrated to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies.

UniKL Acting President and Chief Executive Officer Prof. Dr. Shahrulniza Musa has expressed happiness over the performance of this university.

“The Emerging Economies University Ranking 2021 not only signifies the incredible progress made by UniKL but also reflects an exciting turning point for us. The last two years have been successful moments for UniKL, akin to winning grand slam in higher education,” said Prof Dr. Shahrulniza.

“It was in 2014 that the aspiration in being one of the top universities in Asia by 2020 was conceived, leading to the launching of UniKL five-year We4Asia programme in 2016. Being listed for the first time in THE Emerging Economies University Ranking is a direct result of UniKL’s strategic vision to set out our long term goals,” he stressed.

He added that continued scientific research and technology will assure UniKL’s rapid recognition on the global stage.

UniKL’s other accolades include being among the top best 300 universities in the Quacquarelli-Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings 2021. UniKL is now ranked 291-300, moving up 50 places from the previous ranking.

It also earned a five-star rating in the SETARA ratings exercise announced by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) in December 2020, improving from the four-star rating last held in 2017. Earlier in October UniKL marked a key milestone in THE World Subject Rankings 2020 – ranked in its specialised subject areas, namely, 501–600 in Business and Economics, 801+ in Computer Science, and 801–1000 in Engineering.

UniKL is now categorised as Malaysian top six universities in Business and Economics and top 10 in Computer Science and Engineering respectively.

In September 2020, for the first time, UniKL made it to the list of the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings at 1000+ and in the Top 10 among Malaysian universities.
